Health testing is only one component of responsible breeding, but it is an essential one. By combining advanced diagnostic testing, genetic screening, careful pedigree evaluation, temperament, and overall conformation, I strive to produce healthy, well-adjusted puppies while contributing to the long-term preservation and improvement of the breed.

Health, longevity, and breed preservation are central to my breeding program. Every breeding dog undergoes comprehensive health screening using current breed-specific recommendations and advanced diagnostic testing. My goal is to make informed breeding decisions that prioritize the long-term health and welfare of future generations.

Cardiac Evaluation

Mitral Valve Disease (MVD) is one of the most significant health concerns in the breed. Rather than relying solely on auscultation, I primarily utilize echocardiography in accordance with the Danish Heart Protocol, as it provides a more comprehensive assessment of cardiac health.

Echocardiograms are performed by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist at approximately 24 months of age. Cardiac auscultations are then performed yearly to provide ongoing monitoring.

MRI Screening for Chiari Malformation & Syringomyelia

Every breeding dog undergoes MRI screening for Chiari Malformation (CM) and Syringomyelia (SM). MRI has been an integral part of my breeding program for over many years, allowing breeding decisions to be guided by objective imaging rather than pedigree alone.

My goal is to produce puppies through my program that represent multiple generations of MRI-screened dogs, providing valuable health information across successive generations.

Annual Ophthalmic Examinations

All breeding dogs receive annual examinations by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist to screen for inherited eye diseases, including cataracts and geographic retinal dysplasia, as well as other ocular conditions that may affect the breed.

Orthopedic Screening

Breeding dogs are evaluated for luxating patellae at approximately two years of age. In addition, all breeding dogs undergo radiographic evaluation for hip dysplasia to help support sound structure and long-term orthopedic health.
